Baby Faith

Sermon Reflections from Baby Faith | Alex Hardt | May 4, 2025

Pastor Alex wanted to teach us about growing our faith. Once we accept Jesus as our Savior, it is our job to grow our faith and mature in Christ. The Holy Spirit does the work within us, but we need to be looking, seeking and pursuing godliness. Any steps baby or otherwise delight God and He is pleased with our growth.

How does one grow? Colossians 1:28 points us towards our goal of maturity in Christ. “Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.” Hebrews 5:12-13 speaks of the quality and intensity of our growth. “ For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.” Just like a child, God’s food for us is milk, gentle, easy and brings knowledge to our young faith. As we grow in our knowledge of God and Christ’s righteousness we need to progress to more meaty topic and challenges. For example, a young or new Christian might begin with Bible Study and daily devotions and prayer to ground themselves in God’s Word. The more mature Christian may be involved in teaching young children, leading Bible studies or even Pastoral Ministry. Along with gaining knowledge, we are expected to serve and be helpful to our brothers and sisters in Christ- leading with love.

As we grow as believers, we are gaining knowledge of who God is and what He desires of us. We learn to walk with Him daily and lean into Him for answers, help and guidance. Life’s experiences bring new challenges each day and as we mature in Christ we learn to trust and depend upon Him! It is amazing that the more we mature in Christ and learn to trust and depend upon Him- the MORE we learn we need prayer! Prayer is way we can voice our hopes, dreams, concerns and desires to God and allow Him to answer us. The more one prays the bolder the prayers become!

All this having been said now, where are you in your spiritual growth? Are you still feeding on milk or have you progressed to solid food. How much do you know about God? Are you hungry for the Word of God and crave time alone with Him? To have a faith that produces results you need not be old or refined but your faith needs to be real.

Cling to your faith this week, examine it and seek to measure how you are growing in Christ. Not pleased with what you see? Seek out a home group, a Bible Study, a prayer group….. Take steps to grow your faith as we know that growing faith pleases God.
