Sermon Reflections from 10 Fold | Stephanie Soltero | March 1, 2026
Stephanie did a wonderful job of reviving us up to join the Bible Recap group and experience God’s Word together. It is fun to do this in community and challenge and hold each other accountable to stick with the reading. We can do it!!
The scene before Mt. Sinai is one of fear and awe for the Israelites as they listen to God’s Word. Moses later goes up the mountain and returns with the written word of God as reinforcement. When they listened to God, they all agreed to follow God and do as He commanded. We shall see that sorely tested in the weeks ahead.
Stephanie included as a summary of God’s laws the words of Jesus in Matthew 22:35-40. “ And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
#1- LOVE GOD. In the Ten Commandments God tells us how this specifically should look.
*No other God’s before me. What does that mean in today’s terms? Ask yourself, what do I put before God each day? When do you read your Bible or pray? Not only that, what take precedence in your life- your work, seeking money and material goods, or gaining more education or having fun in your leisure time? All of those can be ‘gods’ or idols we put before God.
*Make not graven images, don’t bow to other gods. All of those reasons above are right there as idols but think about the reason God gives for not wanting us to worship idols. “I am a jealous God.” This jealously of God is one of protective love for us. God loves and seals us with His Holy Spirit. He is righteously angry when His children choose to devote their time and attention to lesser things. Thankfully, when God’s children turn their backs on Him, He pursues them. His is a possessive love because He cares and wants what is best for us.

*Don’t misuse my name. God’s name is holy and there is power in the name of Jesus! It is not to be used lightly, frivolously, or in any derogatory way. Remember its power as we pray in Jesus’ name and so treat it with respect!
*Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. How hard is this for you to set aside a day to go to church, pray a bit more, do things with the family and rest? In our busy world it seems taking a Sabbath has left our memories and it is treated as any other day. Perhaps we need to rethink this for ourselves and set aside time to worship, pray and rest. I know one of my friends has a habit of taking a Sunday nap. In our busy world that is a luxury. She makes time after worship, and fellowshipping to renew herself! We could all take a lesson from her.
#2 LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. The remaining commandments are about how we need to relate to others so that our society will honor God and honor each other.
#2 LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. The remaining commandments are about how we need to relate to others so that our society will honor God and honor each other.
*Honor your father and mother. This is the only commandment with a promise- long life. How do you or did you honor your parents? This can be a complicated thing as families get messy. My parents have passed on, so how can I still honor them? I like to remember them and tell my daughter and grandkids about them. I give them credit when called for and praise their faith. If you are at odds with your parents, pray for reconciliation or their salvation. Each person is different, pray and ask God how you could honor them.
*Do not murder, commit adultery, steal, lie or covet. All of these are important as our society is not honoring to God if murder is allowed or condoned, if adultery is taken as a matter of how things are, stealing is an affront to a person and what they have been given by God, lying is dishonest and steals the truth where God desires us to live by truth- His truth. Lastly, coveting is wanting things you were not given by God, and it is saying what God gave you is not sufficient.
Jesus summed it up in Matthew 22:40 “ On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” All of the advice given in the Bible about how to live was given God through Moses in the Law and later all the prophet’s writings tell us how to live godly lives and what pleases God. It all boils down to 2- Love God, Love your neighbor. Easy to say, but hard to live out daily. Keeping the love of God in the front of your mind will overshadow all you do and through the power of the Holy Spirit you can live victoriously for God in a manner that brings Him glory! Just like reading the word this year, we can do this through God’s power and grace!!
