Sermon Reflections from God I'm Wondering | Don Chalmers | September 20, 2026
Since we are looking at hard questions in life, Don led us to Ezekiel 37 to look into the ‘dry bones’ story. I agree with Greg, this is one of my favorite stories. I guess the visual of dry, bleached, dead bones being resurrected seems like something out of a Star Wars movie. Instead God uses this visual to show Ezekiel and then us, how God can put life into anything as He is All Powerful and All Knowing. The question this story illustrates is,
Is anything too hard for God or is anything beyond His power?
God leads Ezekiel to a valley filled with dry bones, and in Ezekiel 37:1-10 He questions him, in verse 3, can these bones live? Ezekiel wisely answers- only you know Lord. Then God asks Ezekiel to prophesy, speak, over the bones and they begin to have flesh and then breathe. They come to life through Ezekiel’s words by the power of God in the words. In verses 11-14, God gives Ezekiel the meaning of this vision and resurrection of the dry worthless bones. The dead, dry bones represent the nation of Israel which

Then God makes it even better in verse 14, “And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.”
God promises restoration of their spirit and love for Him as well as their land!
What is the message for us in this Old Testament story? Nothing or no one is beyond the reach of our loving, all-powerful God! You can’t be too sinful as God does not measure sin a big or little-it is just sin. I am always comforted and encouraged by Romans 5:8-9 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.”
God knew us and our sin nature before we were even born and loved us anyway. He showed us that He loved us beyond measure by sending Jesus to take the penalty or wrath for our sin. I am reminded of John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
God desires us to be in a relationship with Him and sacrificed His precious Son to die in our place. Just like the dry bones, we can be resurrected through our faith in Jesus’ work on the cross. We can have His new life breathed into us!
Looking at the question of whether or not God has the power to resurrect dry bones, or is anything else beyond Him? We need to again look at God’s character. These hard questions are always direct us back to God’s character. God is Omnipotent (all-powerful). God has unlimited power, authority and influence. He does all He wants and intends to do. God’s powerful Word spoke creation into being from nothing. God is the source of all power, whether it is atoms, energy, life or human strength and authority.
Nothing can stop God. Evil and death will not win. God has the power to keep all His promises!

possible.”

The other attribute of God that came to mind when considering if anything is too hard for God is the fact that God is Omniscient (all-knowing). God is never surprised. He knows all there is to know. Nothing is hidden from God. God knows the past and the future; He knows very person even before we are born. He know the number of our days and all the plans He has for us. He knows what every person thinks, feels, says, and does. Only God knows the choices people would make if their circumstances were different.
Therefore, we can trust God to judge perfectly. Only God knows all things.
Psalm 139:1-4 “O LORD, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you
know it altogether.”
Romans 11:33 “ Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!”
Hebrews 4:13 “And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
Since God has all power and knowledge, nothing, no circumstance or situation could ever to too hard for God! Cling to the promise of Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” He’s got you covered and will always be with you!
